Kaleid-o-scape Perennial Garden
Forming spokes of a wheel, raised beds of perennial flowers extend from a center point to make a melting pot of summer color. Plants of different shapes and sizes form a symmetry of color, or a kaleid-o-scape, of some of the best northern hardy perennials. This garden is a prime example of the functional landscaping methods being used consciously throughout the botanical gardens. From this garden alone, visitors can catch a glimpse of the types of perennial plants they will find throughout the entire property. Guests will also get an idea of which perennial plants are in bloom at that time of their visit, just by standing in this one spot!
As is often the case with our themed gardens, this area seeks to bridge the connection between horticulture and the arts. The Kaleid-o-scape Garden is set up to be a large-scale physical kaleidoscope, embellished by the ever-changing colorful array of blooms throughout the summer season. If you walk to the central hub of this garden, you'll find a real kaleid-o-scope, where you can view a collage of color and design created by the flowers growing in the kaleidoscope's planter.
Horticulture x Visual Arts
The pie slice shaped raised beds are designed to show off a variety colors, shapes and heights of different perennial species. Species are marked by plant ID stakes that are found in their respective raised beds. Varying plants are grown in the central kaleidoscope's planter every year, so returning visitors always get a fresh sight.
This area is as much a garden as it is an art installment!
